Note: The following information is provided as a general guideline for Item Image setup. We highly recommend discussing the optimum image file size and dimensions with your Magento Developer. Every Magento website is different and based on the design of the website you may need different image specifications.

Image Guidelines

Item images should follow these basic guidelines:

  • Format: Images can be .jpg or png.
  • Maximum Image Size: 1000w x 1000h at 72 dpi
  • Maximum File Size: 200kb (ideally under 100kb)

Note: Once you had picked the image format that you would like to use ALL product images should use the same format.

Assigning Images to Items

Counterpoint: Inventory / Items

By default, Counterpoint uses the item number plus .jpg as the name of the corresponding image.

  • EX: 500108.jpg

If you would like to use a custom image name for your products then populate the "Image file" field on the Ecommerce tab of the item screen.

  • EX: my-seo-friendly-image-name.jpg

Note: Image file names should be all lowercase with spaces replaced by dashes (-)

Uploading Item Images

Item images in Magento can be uploaded in one of two ways.

  1. Using the primary method, Commerce5 will upload a single, large image, from the Counterpoint Server to the Magento Server which will then be automatically scaled.
  2. The secondary method is manually uploading an image using the browse feature under the item details to upload a base image, which also be scaled automatically for you. Supported image file types are JPG and PNG.

Note: You must choose 1 of these 2 methods. It is NOT recommended to try and combine these two different methods.

Image Size

It is recommended you limit your overall image size to 800w x 800h. Magento will take this single image, and re-size as needed for the other primary image sizes (Small Image and Thumbnail). Requirements for alternate and swatch images will be covered in a later topic. To properly associate the image to the item in your store, please us the naming format of [ITEMNUMBER].jpg. (ex. BIKE-170.jpg).

Uploading your images automatically, is as simple as placing them in the Counterpoint Top Level "ItemImages" directory so that Commerce5 can send them to Magento for you.

Example Item Naming Convention

  • Spaces replaced by _
  • /,& replace by _
  • #,% will be removed

Automatic Image Optimization Extension for Magento

Images are very important for online stores, but unnecessarily large images can slow down the user experience and reduce search engine rankings. Image Optimization will optimize your images and reduce their size without sacrificing image quality, so that your site images are faster loading.
